Yellow: I sit on my bed, cross-legged, rocking... →
allisonlincoln: I sit on my bed, cross-legged, rocking back and forth. The sleep I couldn’t quite obtain taunts me from my pillows, leaving its telling shadows under my eyes. “He is doing something, He is doing something,”’ I whisper to the ceiling, blinking as a hummingbird bats its wings, as if one tear will… What she said. Seriously.

A French thought
Two etymologically unrelated French words have an interestingly coincidental visual similarity, being but one letter apart:  Nourriture - Food, nourishment Pourriture - Rot, decay Little things make a difference, and not just in spelling.

I laughed.
I work with a lady named Debby; she’s wonderful. She’s a heavy smoker, probably in her seventies, and she loves to get in the Christmas spirit with sweaters and sleigh bells. She’s like a grandma for the workplace.  Tonight, after the store closed, we were both sorting through piles of candy and baked goods in the break room and pilfering to our heart’s desire. Corporate...

Anecdotes
(My cat is sitting on one of my arms as I type this, fyi.) Life in the bookstore was interesting today.  As I’m ringing someone up at the checkout line, he very earnestly tells me: “I like your beard.” Dumbfounded, I answer, “Thank you.” “I mean it,” he says. “I usually don’t like those beards, but yours is…” -pauses as if the...

Your advice needed!
I am going to pick a book to buy as a Christmas present to myself this winter. I need suggestions; can you help?  Some books I’ve thoroughly enjoyed: Blink and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell Anything by John Steinbeck Death With Interruptions by José Saramago Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Graffiti
In the men’s bathroom at work, there is a single bit of graffiti. The first time I noticed it, two simple words were joined by a symbol:  people = shit I saw it again recently, and it is still the only writing on the wall. Someone changed the words, however, erasing the last two letters and adding a new ending: people = sheer joy I like the evolution happening there.

Yeah, so... skanks. (I'm not sexist, I promise....
I started work again. Today was my second day of the season; I work in a bookstore in Brentwood, which is an upscale community in the Nashville metropolis. Our clientele reflects our geographical location, and most of the vehicles in the parking lot are made by Lexus, Mercedes, Lincoln, BMW, or similar companies. Approximately 80% of the clients are female, which probably says something about...

Goals...
I just finished the most hectic bit of life within living remembrance. At the outset of the semester, I decided to challenge myself with a crazy academic workload that culminated in my writing  at least 62 pages of papers and essays in the last two weeks of school, not to mention an in-class presentation and a panel discussion/debate. Needless to say, I basically had no time for recreation those...

Mark Zuckerberg is TIME Person of the Year?
Instead of Julian Assange, freedom fighter of the Information Age and founder of WikiLeaks?  Instead of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister who has decidedly improved the quality of life for his countrymen and taken bold steps to speak for truth and justice in Middle Eastern conflicts?  (I’m especially impressed with him.) Instead of Jonathan Franzen, the modern writer of a...

I just came up with a title for my last paper of the semester, and it’s the most scholarly sounding title of anything I’ve ever written. Drumroll… Samson Reconsidered: A case study in narrative ambiguity Not original at all… but I think it sounds smart, right?

Depression is a dirty beast. Without the sympathy of others, it could perhaps prove fatal. And yet - it is much harder to break out of when one actually does receive the sympathy of others. A vicious conundrum indeed. Sometimes people can even convince you that you’re depressed when you wouldn’t be otherwise.

I might be alone in this...
but writing a pithy saying or an emotional whine on an index card then taking a picture of it is a rather lazy sort of art. And lazy art is not impressive - and maybe not quite art, as it takes very little imagination or effort.
